Industry as laboratory

A practice-based research model.

In CELECT, all the work packages use the Industry-as-Laboratory method. This means that research is carried out close to industry, in collaboration with businesses that are right in the middle of the challenges we want to solve. This practice-based approach ensures that the results are highly relevant and have immediate value for both business and society.

In 1993, Collin Potts introduced the research model Industry-as-Laboratory – an approach that connects research more closely to real needs in industry. The model is based on close cooperation between researchers and industry partners to identify concrete challenges in actual working environments.

Through this collaboration, researchers are able to test methods, tools and processes directly in industrial settings. The results can be observed and analysed continuously, providing an objective basis for assessing the effect of new solutions. This practice-based approach ensures that the research is not only theoretically sound, but also relevant, applicable and value-creating for businesses.

Industry-as-Laboratory forms an important basis for research centres that want to offer innovative solutions with clear benefits for society and industry.
