Complex systems
We will develop new ways of modelling and working to handle the increasing complexity in modern systems. From idea and design to finished product throughout the entire lifecycle.

What are we researching?
«Complex systems» is one of the research projects in SFI CELECT. We research these areas:
Making tacit expert knowledge accessible. Much of the system knowledge in industry often sits in employees' heads. It is difficult to transfer and even harder to standardise. We therefore work directly in ongoing industrial projects to highlight critical experience and decisions, develop simple methods to document and share this knowledge, and strengthen knowledge transfer to new engineers and project teams.
Developing better methods for the design of complex systems. We help industry with methods that anticipate and manage emerging system behaviour. This should lead to more robust development processes that reduce risk early in projects.
Lifecycle methods that ensure quality all the way. A system must function throughout its entire life, not just upon delivery. We develop tools and frameworks that make it possible to assess robustness, safety, sustainability, performance and function from the design phase and construction through to operation and upgrades. In this way, businesses can make better choices early, with lower costs and greater accuracy.
Why is this important?
- Modern technology projects are becoming increasingly demanding.
- Systems are growing in scope, becoming more closely interconnected and depend on solutions that are safe, sustainable and reliable in operation.
- At the same time, complexity is increasing, technology is developing rapidly and important expertise is difficult to pass on to the next generation of engineers.
We work closely with partners from industry and the public sector to meet exactly these challenges.
We help businesses understand, develop and improve their complex systems, from idea and design to finished product throughout the entire lifecycle.
