Smart Design

We develop AI-assisted methods and tools that enable engineering companies to design better products and components, with fewer engineers, faster.

What do we research?

Our research spans three areas:

  • AI-assisted design tools – Explore a wider solution space earlier in the design process
  • Digital twins – From design optimisation to deployable software, automatically
  • Human–AI collaboration – How engineers use AI effectively and responsibly

Why does this matter?

Engineering companies invest significant time and resources in physical prototyping and specialist expertise. Through research and innovation, we develop methods and tools that enable them to:

  • Reduce the number of physical prototypes by 50%
  • Increase design process efficiency by 30–35%
  • Achieve more with their existing engineering teams
  • Design more sustainable systems with extended service life and lower energy consumption

Who do we work with?

Our partners are leading organisations in defence, maritime, and manufacturing – from large system integrators to specialised engineering firms.

AI-assisted design tools
The research will focus on developing AI-assisted methods for parallel hardware-software co-design of mechatronic systems, enabling virtual prototyping and simulation-driven development from early design stages.
